Remembering The Fallen

– by Lt Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Poem written during World War 1 by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier.

5 ways to protect kids on Halloween

Help protect trick-or-treaters by following these driving safety tips on Halloween. Be especially careful between 4 and 8 p.m., when most severe vehicle/young pedestrian collisions happen.

  1. See ahead. Make sure your windshield is wiped clean, both inside and out.
  2. Drive slowly, and don’t pass stopped vehicles. The driver might be dropping off children.
  3. Park your mobile phone. Avoid distractions by waiting until you’ve stopped to call, text, or surf.
  4. Watch for children darting into the street. Kids can cross the street anywhere, especially around Halloween.
  5. Communicate with other drivers. Always use your turn signals and your hazard lights when dropping off or picking up kids.

Weatherproofing Your Windshield

weatherproof your windshield

Fall and winter weather is right around the corner. Here are a few of the ways you can protect your auto glass. However, each of these tips can go a long way in preventing damage to your windshield during winter.

Inspect your windshield for chips or cracks

Chips and cracks should be professionally repaired immediately.

Have your windshield professionally treated with a rain repellent
This will help your visibility stay high, no matter how heavy the rain or snow might get.

Install newer, stronger wiper blades
This simple step may go a long way in helping you avoid low visibility during downpours.

Use an antifrost or defogging product
If you are not familiar with how to apply these products, ask our auto glass professionals for help. Call us at 604-255-6383 today.

Don’t forget the Coke!

Planning a cross country road trip this summer? Bugs on your windsheild?

Coke (or Pepsi) can do a quick and dirty job tearing through thick layers of insects, grime, and crap. Pour the soda on to a rag and wash your windshield then rinse with a wet cloth or your regular windshield wipers. Just be careful to avoid getting coke on your paint job. This isn’t the best solution if your car is sitting at home, but if you’re stuck on the road…this works great!

However, when it comes to stone chips on your windsheild – better call B&D Autobody and Glass –and get it fixed right!

Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning your Mini.

Freshening the interior.

Use a vacuum to remove debris and dirt from the seats, floor mats, rugs, and trunk. A rented steam cleaner works well for deep cleaning stains, but those can get expensive. Try a household spray-on carpet cleaner first. For leather trim, use a leather cleaner. Clean the inside of windows with glass cleaner, but spray directly onto your cloth to avoid streaking.

Restoring the exterior shine.

First, move into the shade. Never wash or wax a car in direct sunlight, or if the paint is hot to the touch. Bright sun can soften the paint and make it more susceptible to scratching. And don’t use dish detergent on your car. Use a dedicated car-wash soap designed for use on automotive paint. Fill a bucket with plenty of water, and apply the suds with a clean natural sponge or a lamb’s-wool mitt.

Maintenance checks.

Spring is also a great time to check your windshield wipers for wear and tear after battling snow and ice. If they’re leaving streaks, it’s probably time for new blades. Tests have found that most blades are ready for replacement by just six months, but you can try extending their service life by wiping them with a cloth and glass cleaner before removing them.

Under the hood.

Clean engine parts with plain soap and water or with a commercial degreasing product, like Gunk. Be careful, though, not to get electrical connections wet. Be particularly attentive to keeping water away from the fuse box, cable junctions, and the large electrical connectors near the firewall.

If the battery terminals are growing white encrusted fuzz, clean the battery with a damp rag soaked with a solution of water and baking soda. Use a stiff toothbrush dipped in the baking-soda solution for the tough parts.

Giving your vehicle a good spring cleaning is a great way way to prepare yourself for those soon-to-come summer vacation trips.

Windshields Can Crack Due to Cold Temperatures

cold weather can crack windshieldsA Heads Up To Motorists

The recent drop in temperatures around Vancouver could cause your car windshield to crack. Glass expands and contracts due to temperature so it is important to avoid sudden temperature changes.

Never use boiling water to defrost your windshield. Instead, turn on the defroster and let the windshield warm up slowly. However, be careful not to set the defroster too high. Let the windshield warm up gradually so the glass isn’t shocked by cold temperatures outside and warm temperatures inside, which can also lead to cracking or developing larger cracks from ones that already exist.

These are all reasons why windshield repair is very important before, or during freezing weather.

Watching Out For The Kids

7 safe driving tips.

Kids heading back to school

With children and youth returning to school in the coming weeks, B&D Glass Ltd would like to remind drivers to be extra cautious on the roads during this busy time of year.

7 Driving Tips to Keep Kids Safe

  1. Reduce your speed. Be more careful in residential areas where children are present. Respect speed limits in school zones and playground zones.
  2. Stop for school buses displaying the flashing red lights and the extended stop arm. In most cases, traffic in both directions must stop for school buses. Do not continue on until the flashing lights stop.
  3. Obey crossing guards.
  4. Never overtake other vehicles within a school zone or within a half block of any crosswalk.
  5. Give cyclists a wide berth (a minimum clearance of one metre is the rule in some jurisdictions).
  6. Shoulder check before opening your vehicle door.
  7. Leave extra time to reach your destination.
